ambassador. well, obviously that's what the obama administration is doing. >> you have a lot of fodder for your weekend show, so we'll be watching it and also for suzanne malveaux's shows which is up and coming. thank you for taking the time to be on our show today. fareed zakaria, and as i sign off, i do want remind you "newsroom international" starts right now with suzanne malveaux. >> kuhn dem the president for leading from behind, declaring it is time to change -- criticized the obama administration for not having an overall strategy in this region, and here's how he summed it up. the know the president hopes for a safer, freer, aligned middle east with us. i share this hope, but hope is not a strategy. we can't support our friends and defeat our enemies in the middle east when our words are not backed up by deeds. >> now, wolf, we know he was referring to a lot of the protests around in the region, and even the killing of the u.s. ambassador in benghazi, libya, but when you listen to what he is saying here, how much of it do you think is about a failed strategy or what is simply o

. he points to the obama administration ideology being at fault both before the attack and afterwards. that's important to understand. before the attack we clearly didn't suspect it was coming. that's due to an intelligence failure in the sense we looked for information and couldn't get it or if the ideological reason applied they didn't think we needed to ask for the information. al qaeda has been defeated, the war on terror is over, libya is a great success, what could go wrong. obviously it did go wrong. but if the administration from the top down isn't processing reality, this is the kind of tragedy you. bill: you are pinpointing the ideology. so this was their mental thinking about the condition of the arab world or that region or libya specifically do you think? >> i think very broadly. it goes to president obama's view of america's place in the world. it's a corollary to what he thinks america' domestic structure looks like. it made him in the case of libya and kay row and elsewhere -- libya and cairo and elsewhere in the region to see the islamists' rise. it was a brother and

the obama administration. what do you make of this, chris? >> well, you're exactly right. obama had a bad first debate and you don't want to have two bad debates in a row. i don't think that biden will. you know, it's interesting, i interviewed paul ryan last week and talked to him about, about biden and i said what do you think of biden? you've been studying him obviously and prepping for him. he said, look, he's a very experienced guy and been in this for 40 years and you're not going to throw him off his game. and i said, yeah, how about the gaffes? he says he makes those in exte extempraneous on the stump and i don't think that he was spinning me, a strong determined biden. what's fascinating is the contrast between these guys, an old school liberal in the case of biden and a young gun conservative in the case of paul ryan and i mean, these guys couldn't be further apart in their outlook on the government and what they think are the solutions for the country over the next four years. >> and the way they speak, too, right, guys? and paul ryan we talking to huckabee, does paul ryan run

critique of obama as leading from behind, which was from an unnamed administration official at the end of a 8000 word new yorker magazine piece last year. it has become a staple of republican critics of the president's foreign-policy. there are some real differences between obama and romney when it comes to foreign policy. those are substantive. romney has called a rush of the number one geopolitical foe of the u.s. promised to the surprise even of his own advisers. he has continued to emphasize that and to say that vladimir putin will get nothing from me. barack obama has emphasized as one of his major foreign-policy accomplishments a reset with russia that has enabled us to get more done, whether it is sending supplies into afghanistan through the northern route, which has become a much more significant issue as there have been problems with pakistan that made it difficult for us to get in and out, or having a new nuclear arms limitation agreement with russia. so that's a substantive difference. there are others as well. when it comes to some of the core middle east issues, how to st

the problems for the middle class and that the obama administration has started to pull it out by its boot straps. and so the obama campaign just in case we didn't get that has a statement that says that the romney campaign is taking this entirely out of context. it's obviously in looking at the full transcript that joe biden was talking about the fact that the middle class was buried under failed bush policies. and of course they say romney/ryan would change all that. however, this is an opportunity, which the romney campaign is taking to say, you know what, we agree with you. the middle class has been buried and we're going to change that. imagine this as kind of the dry season in the west in the summer. and any match or any lightning strike is going to start a huge fire. and that's what's going on here the closer we get to the election. >> this is coming a day before the debate. how detrimental could this be for the obama campaign? >> i'm sure the obama campaign is thinking this is a headache they don't need. as you know in the past joe biden has given them a bunch of headaches. they li

: that goes, said romney, for the muslim world, from libya to syria to iran. he suggested obama policies in libya let al qaeda get strong enough to kill our ambassador. in syria, romney would get the rebels heavy weapons, despite the administration's fear they will end up in the hands of al qaeda. and romney claimed he would be tougher on iran about nuclear weapons. >> this is a dangerous situation. >> reporter: romney said president obama's making it more dangerous by resisting israeli prime minister netanyahu's apparent willingness to attack iranian nuke plants. >> i know the president hopes for a safer, freer, and more pros pous middle east, along with us. i share this hope. but hope is not a strategy. >> reporter: romney's remarks, said one expert, are not a strategy. >> he tried to sound very tough in his critique of barack obama today. however, those are mostly rhetorical differences on some of those key foreign policy issues as opposed to actual new tough policies. >> reporter: the president fired back in an ad to run in virginia. >> reckless, amateurish, that's what news media an
